Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

San Diego, CA Writing tutoring
I had the student read a couple passages and identify the main themes. We went over various literary terms from Tuesday and then we discussed persuasive writing. I had her write a persuasive paragraph and read it to me while I presented a counter argument. We discussed what she did well and what she needed to work on.

The student and I discussed the personal narrative portion of her application to graduate school. I helped her brainstorm possible topics, then helped her organize these ideas into an outline. I also gave her suggestions for creating smooth transitions between the components of the essay.

I followed up on the argumentative essay assignment from yesterday with the student. We spent the session first discussing a topic through brainstorming and developing a thesis; then, we focused on refining and clarifying her thesis and where she should look for evidence; finally, we spent time outlining the essay and well as discussing where to find good sources, how to incorporate them into her essay, and how to finish her assignment. I think she's made good progress overall--certainly since July. The key is to provide her ongoing challenging assignments and encourage her to outline and go through her work carefully. Great work.

This was my last session with the student. We went over both the fictional and informational essays. I wrote him a list of things to remember which include: proofreading, word choice, explaining why he included each of his points, and asking himself if his audience can follow his train of thought.

We worked a bit on the student's writing; I got him down to a small line which he did really well with for a first time. I've also determined that the book I got is too advanced so I have been reading it so he can hear the changes in my voice based on punctuation (again having him follow along and telling me if I'm changing my voice appropriately based on the punctuation and having him correct me when I do it incorrectly.) I was told that Wednesday he will be evaluated by a private school to determine if he should go into first or second grade, so I will look into the assessments as much as I can find online to make sure he is 2nd grade ready by then. Monday I will have him read "Go Dog Go" again to see how much has changed since we first started together.

During this session, we focused on the student's personal statement. He had written three of a planned five paragraphs independently. I am working with him on condensing and tightening up his writing to fit the format of a word number limited personal statement. During the session, we focused primarily on revising strategies that will help him write in a more condensed style. He will continue to revise independently until our next session.
