The student showed confidence in chapter 1 information and understands the content. She will review and reread chapter 2 in order to fully comprehend. I sent her notes and other materials for chapter 2, and we will reconvene to prepare for the chapter 2 quiz.

Today's session was used to discuss alkane nomenclature as well as cyclic alkanes. The majority of our time was spent discussing the chair conformers of cyclohexane and which conformation is more stable depending on the axial equatorial position of substituents. We finished by practicing chemical nomenclature and the physical properties of alkanes. The student showed the ability to work in a step-wise process in order to determine the names of alkanes. My biggest goal was to make sure that she could create accurate chair conformers for cyclohexane, as this is going to be a big concept to understand. I feel that she did a great job with the basics and should be able to accurately draw any cyclohexane conformers on a test or quiz. We will continue with alkenes in the next session, as well as alkynes and some basic functional group material.

In this session, the student and I worked through a practice exam in preparation for an upcoming test on substitution reactions and conformations of cyclohexane. In my observation, she had a strong grasp of the sub-concepts entering into the meeting, but struggled with some of the more nuanced facets to them. I base this statement off the fact that she got many of the practice questions correct without my assistance, but missed a few of them due to overlooking certain minute details. I enjoyed the session because she has an obvious interest in the material and had no trouble processing the things that we discussed. To aid in her ability to draw various conformations of cyclohexane with a high degree of accuracy, I demonstrated a technique that allows one to see the compound in two dimensions first. I believe that this added step in the problem solving process will greatly reduce the incidence of errors in diagramming a given molecule. For extra practice, I recommended completing the rest of the review without my assistance. Thanks.
