The student and I did more work on reading comprehension of the novel, "The Outsiders." We worked on identifying passages in chapter 3 of the novel relating to the literary devices we discussed, which were theme, tone, and characterization. He is becoming more accustomed to reading critically and actively for literary analysis. He was engaged and attentive during the session, and displayed a positive attitude toward the material reviewed. No new strategies or study skills were included in this session. We continued to practice what was previously introduced. I would like him to be able to implement the strategies already discussed without prompting before I add anything new. The win from this session is that he is becoming more adept with recognizing our three main literary devices in the passages he reads.

We also reviewed how to effectively edit essays for length and content.

As with any test prep, I feel as though confidence is the most important thing to build prior to heading into this stressful task. I do feel as though he is increasing in his confidence towards the SAT material.

In math, we covered mixed fractions and order of operations. The student was struggling with understanding his teacher's method of solving a certain problem vs. the method that I was trying to teach him. I want him to start thinking of problems in terms of logic, if 3+5 = 8, then 3+5 cannot = 1. Once he recognizes that on a daily basis, he will have a much easier time realizing when he is doing a problem correctly or not.

Today the student and I worked the essay that he handed in on "Of Mice and Men." Although he had developed a good thesis, he needed help developing his body and conclusion. I demonstrated that a good essay revolves around its thesis. Thus, each supporting paragraph should in some way, shape, or form support the thesis. He had expository material that neither supported nor refuted his thesis. After he hands his final draft in I am going to have him write a short paragraph about why his final draft is better than his rough.
