Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

San Diego, CA Essay Editing tutoring
Student A and I did grammar and spelling correction using her English workbooks. It helped for us to read the incorrect sentences out loud together so that she could hear the mistakes that needed correcting. Student B and I read and did a writing exercise inspired by her book in which I asked her to write about a time she or someone she knew told a really funny joke. We talked about syntax and practiced rewriting her original paragraph with different sentence combinations to tell the story.

Administered a 60-second oral reading fluency assessment using a grade 3 passage (76 words, 2 errors, 1 self-correction). The student was attentive to monitoring his reading aloud; improvement noted. Introduced vocabulary for a "Rhyming Animals" poem with attention on rhyming word patterns and sounds; focused on using the text to answer comprehension questions; and conducted an oral retelling of the poem. Concluded the session with written sentences using three vocabulary words and shared the information verbally.

The student's confidence seems to grow with each session. Today we focused primarily on 2 things: silent reading vs. reading aloud, and reading higher-vocabulary texts. We began with her reading homework from school. She read it silently to herself, then we talked about it and attacked the comprehension questions. The homework passage was conceptually more challenging that her regular homework has seemed, but it also appears that she has a little more trouble with the main idea and cause and effect when she's reading silently. She understood and remembered most of the key details, but had more trouble putting them all together than she's had in the past when we work on passages and she reads aloud. In future, the key will continue to be to get her to read actively when doing silent reading-and making sure she's just as focused on the main idea as she is on the details. We also looked at a very challenging passage that I brought in. Although geared towards 2nd grade, it contained a lot of science vocabulary and was quite long. She did a really wonderful job of sticking with it, reading both silently and aloud, and focusing on what she could understand more than on the few words she didn't recognize.

We reviewed the Jamestown story and read a new story. We read a mystery today and the student was engaged throughout the story. He understood the story and was able to answer the reading comprehension questions at the end. I am emailing him another story to read over the weekend for more practice.

The student did really well today! We finished up her homework for the week, so she is prepared for tomorrow! We started working on her big project that is due April 8 and we have a plan so that we can finish that up in the next couple sessions. She is doing very well, and with some more practice reading, she should be able to do her homework a little easier.

We began this session with the student's math problem of the week -- if there are 60 coins in a jar and 1/5 are nickels and 1/6 are dimes, etc. -- which he devoured in about ten minutes. I expected it to take at least half the session. We practiced math for another half hour, practicing rounding and division, at which point we read from his book, and discussed character, motivation, and setting. The work was excellent all around.
