Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I gave her a reading survey and a short series of timed reading passages that I will score in order to assess her approximate reading level. I then worked with her on a reading passage with multiple-choice questions and an essay question that was recently graded and sent home from school. She seems to struggle with using evidence from the text in order to answer the questions and she admits to having a hard time remembering more than one word at a time when trying to take reading notes or when answering essay questions based on a reading passage. We are going to work on answering multiple-choice questions and essay questions based on a book of her choosing, then we will move into standards-based passages and questions. I am also going to try to help her improve her memory, which will help her when she gets older and has to take more notes."
"The student read several "Splat the Cat" books and began a "Young Cam Jansen" book and responded to writing prompts about the books. His fluency is improving, and he is becoming more engaged with the stories. His retelling ability is also improving, and it will be a primary focus of the next few sessions."
"I performed a diagnostic to evaluate the student's reading level. She reads fairly fluently but has issues with comprehension and recall of the material. We focused on building reading comprehension through visualization, drawing each scene of the story. She also answered questions about the story afterward, and visualization seemed helpful to her. She learned about the reading comprehension strategy of inference through an iPad game. She understood the concept very well, and next week we will work on applying it to more-complex reading material."
"I helped the student review his material and outline for his upcoming essay. I helped him to find quotes to use from his material and broke down concepts to him so that he could use them in order and develop his theme."
"Today, we were able to revise the final exam to a more structured paragraph form after the student suggested her professor might respond more positively to her responses. The responses were somewhat condensed or expanded to do this. The student also added some material to the responses as needed or rewrote a few to gain the generally accurate word count using the word counts that were to be our guide as far as how much/long to include."
"We had a highly productive session. The student had done a great job on his writing homework, finishing his essay and leaving virtually nothing left to correct. We are now at the point of needing to work up to writing and answering questions faster and faster to get his work under the time limits. We worked on practice questions as well, and he showed marked improvement as his got back into the work. He has an essay to write and questions to answer for next time."
