The student and I spent our first session going through the first critical reading section of the first practice exam. We began with the sentence completion questions. We discussed the concept of signal words and punctuation in order to clue what the right answer is based on the buried definition of the answer in the question. We also discussed strategies for how to navigate the dual-word completions. He seemed to understand these concepts well. What seems to be the limiting factor, as is with all students in this section, is vocabulary. I started working with him on how to break down the answers into various components to check if all components are addressed. The more he practiced this, the better he became at answering the questions correctly. We will continue with the critical reading section on Monday and finish the last passage from this practice section.

We began the session by going over practice matrix questions that I found online. The student performed best on these when I asked him to identify the pattern in the first set before looking at the possible answers for the second set. After the matrix questions, he did timed coding problems. We used the coding sheets in the practice test, and I timed how quickly he could fill out one row. I then challenged him to see if he could do each row a little faster than the prior row. When he knew that he was being timed, he could significantly increase his speed. We then focused on spatial skills using both the blocks and the tangoes. I would create a shape and then ask him if he could make that same shape, but rotated 90 degrees. He could replicate the shape easily.

San Clemente, CA Test Prep tutoring
The student is taking the ACT on Saturday. We started with a Review of two reading passages. She did very well with the prose passage, and struggled with the humanities passage (10/10 & 5/10 respectively). For the humanities passage, her main issue was a misunderstanding of one of the author's stated beliefs. We talked about ways to double check her understanding of the passage. Next we moved on to science. She had previously competed 3 science passages. We talked about different ways to approach certain types of questions such as eliminating middle answers when the questions asks for extremes (highest/lowest), using all figures/tables/equations, and indicator words for specific studies/experiments/activities. Lastly, we finished with math. We worked through 15 problems, highlighting the type of each problem ratio/algebra/averages/geometry/trig and the approach to each problem. She has 2 science passages and some math problems to review before her ACT.
