"We started by going over a verbal practice test she had taken on her own. We found definitions for all of the words she had missed so she would not miss them again. We talked about strategies for figuring out the words she had never seen, as well as guessing strategy (don't guess unless you can narrow down the answers to 3 or fewer!). Then we moved on to a math section. She was able to answer most of the questions with no problem. I suggest she go over how to work with percents this week, as she saw on this practice test they come up a lot. She did well on the math section, but we did discuss timing and guessing strategies for this section too, as well as how to work with the answer choices to save time. I think she will do very well on the test if she stays calm and takes her time reading, and doesn't get too stressed out. I wish her the best of luck in her testing and applications."
"Today we focused mainly on math practice, though we took short "breaks" to review some English. I provided minimal support and explanations to allow the student to problem solve as he will when taking the test on Saturday. He continues to grow in confidence and familiarity with the different types of math problems. During our next session, the student will take a mock test, and I will give any necessary tips and suggestions that will be helpful for Saturday."
"The student showed significant improvement on his practice test (quantitative pre- 55th percentile/ post- 68th percentile, verbal pre-33rd percentile/ post- 62nd percentile, reading pre-31st percentile/ post-60th percentile). His number sense is exceptional; he just needs to review his answers."
