Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

San Clemente, CA Latin tutoring
The student and I reviewed a specific word order for translating sentences from Latin to English in order to prepare her to be able to break down the complex sentence structure of Cicero's writing into simpler comprehensible units for translation into English. We practiced this using a sentence by Cicero that also contained two verbs in the subjunctive. By focusing on these verbs, we also continued our practice from last week on uses of the Latin subjunctive.

The student and I reviewed verb uses within a story, and she worked on her assignment for class. The most important aspect of the session was highlighting the fact that the passive endings only occur in the present system.

The student and I went over all the 1st through 5th conjugations in the indicative tenses: present, imperfect, future, perfect, pluperfect, and future perfect. We also discussed the meanings in differences between those tenses. We then went over present and imperfect subjunctive in each of the 5 conjugations. Finally, we ended with two sentences from Latin. The student is a pleasure to work with and, I believe, is working really hard outside of these tutoring sessions. I asked him to rehearse the above and finish the perfect and pluperfect subjunctive.

The student did very well today, especially with temporal clauses! We worked on different past quizzes, while also going over the grammar in preparation for her final tonight. We focused on procedures for translating, and she did very well with that!

Tonight was my first session with the student. We covered the following concepts: 1. Identifying tenses, genders, and numbers of verbs, as well as cases and uses of nouns in a translation, which he will be doing this week in class. 2. Reviewing the conjugation of two irregular verbs that he will need to know for a test this week. 3. Reviewing the English translation for the six verb tenses in active and passive voice. He wants to raise his grade for this semester. At the beginning of the session, he said that translating is confusing to him with all the different endings. He seems to know a good many of his endings, and I offered to send charts for nouns and verbs to him to review. One suggestion I gave him tonight that seemed to help was to always find his verb first and then look for a subject to agree with the verb. If there is no subject, he can always go with the pronoun in the verb for his subject. This seemed to help him as he translated for me.

The student did a superb job today! I'm proud of her for taking the reins of her own learning. She wrote me and asked that, during these last three sessions, we concentrate on the perfect system of Latin verbs, on which she felt particularly weak. We started the session with a review of the perfect system, then doing together the first item in her Grammatical Justification - Perfect System special exercise. We then tackled the Present Perfect Tense explanation/exercise set, on which she did a great job. Thanks so much for your great, hard work today.
