Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Prior to today's session, I created a compilation of exercises that would enable me to gain a better perspective on the student's retention levels (previous session and practice work) and to further investigate her ability to think outside the questions. During this exercise, I timed each problem and took down notes related to each skill set. This will allow me to determine the level of attention each skill set will get in future sessions and practice tests. Skills covered: point-slope formula, distance formula, absolute value, numeric sequences, perimeter of hexagon word problems, area of square, finding the diagonal of a square, volume of a cube, FOIL, midpoint formula, perpendicular lines, y-intercepts of functions, determining values for exterior angles of triangles, Pythagorean theorem, arithmetic sequences, finding the reciprocal, arithmetic mean, simplifying expressions with fractions, percents, decimal equivalents of fractions, and finding the volume of a right cone."
"Today we worked out of the 9th edition text to go over reading comprehension and sentence completion. After doing the diagnostic tests in the beginning of the verbal section, we decided to focus on the types of questions that come up on reading comp and how to approach this section. We worked through several practice passages, and she really improved both the speed at which she did the questions as well as her accuracy (the last 2 practice passages she answered perfectly). Towards the end of the lesson we started discussing testing strategies to be successful on the sentence completion section of the test. For homework, I assigned one full reading comp section (practice test #5, section 3). Next lesson we will review the homework and continue working on sentence completion questions."
"I specifically covered the ISEE homework I had assigned her (one section of math and one section of verbal). She is a wonderful student and there is just room for improvement in the verbal. The student is very bright and now it's just a matter of learning as many words as possible. I left her with a lot of verbal homework and look forward for our session tomorrow."
