Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Sammamish, WA Phonics tutoring
The student and I worked on spelling and reading. First, he went through his spelling homework. Each week, he is given a list of vocabulary words and has to put those words into sentences. So we went over the sentences that he had already written--making sure to go over grammar mistakes, and the meanings of the words in context--and then he wrote sentences for the remaining words on the list. After he finished his homework, he picked out a favorite book to practice reading. I had him read aloud to me two chapters, and stopped him a few times to ask him questions about the reading. We also made a vocabulary list of 10 words we saw in the reading that he didn't know the meanings of yet; next week, we'll continue building this list, and write sentences using those vocabulary words! He seems really enthusiastic about reading and learning, and I really enjoy working with him.

The student and I worked on reading fluency passages. We also read two stories, one that was on his level, and one that was above his level. The story that was at his level- he took home to practice. We also worked on the inflectional endings -ed and -ing ,as well as compound words. We practiced vowel teams, and will go into more depth with that on Saturday.

Today the student and I looked over his math packet which is due on Friday to make sure he didn't have any questions or concerns. He brought his reading skills book (reading comprehension) and I also brought with me some questions from previous state assessment reading exams. We worked on strategies when reading stories and also highlighted on certain things to look for when reading the questions such as answers that may seem correct but are meant to trick you. At the end, we finished with a poem and will continue with reading strategies next Thursday.

We practiced reading short words and reviewed letter sounds. The student continues to build confidence, but he still struggles with recalling certain letter sounds (F, H, L). His confidence has increased and should continue building with consistent practice. We'll continue to work on this.

We started the session with white boards. The student successfully wrote dog, bog, fog, and frog. He showed confidence in writing b and d. For reading comprehension, he read a paragraph about Jessica. He wrote the answers to the comprehension questions, and he showed more comfort with writing. In reading, I helped him with the words bacon, every, breakfast, and pancakes. He finished pages Xx, Yy, and Zz. Then he read the whole alphabet book. He is getting faster at connecting the letter, sound, and pictures he drew to associate the sounds. He easily completed a literacy worksheet that required him to fill in the blanks to complete sentences. We read the rest of Changing Seasons. He read one page, and I read another. He did a great job! He also brought out a book for me to read entitled My Nasty Backpack. It was fun reading it with him!

We started today's session by reviewing the letters A and B, their sounds, and some words that begin with A and B. We then started working with the letters C and D. I had the student identify both the capital and lowercase of each letter, the sounds they make, and words that start with each letter. We worked on writing, tracing, and circling each letter and words with the beginning sounds of C and D. We also then reviewed A, B, C, and D letter and sound recognition. We will stick with these four letters for our next session or two until he has them down.
