Today, we covered problems that will most likely show up on the next midterm. For example, we went over reactions of alcohols and ketones and how they are involved in multi-step "predict the product" types of problems. We did problems pertaining to stereochemistry, such as determining priority groups and determining whether or not the chiral center is R or S. The student understands stereochemistry rather well, he just needs to commit some of the reactions to memory and how to figure out their mechanisms. He is starting to understand how Sn2, Sn1, E1, and E2 work. The only gray area here is how to differentiate between when an Sn2 reaction occurs versus an E2. He is getting close to being ready for the midterm, and Saturday's session should really hammer home some concepts.

Today, we wrapped up on preparing for the final exam tomorrow morning. There is still a lab exam on Friday, so we'll meet one more time tomorrow to discuss NMR, and, if the student feels like it, any other lab techniques or concepts. I know there is a lot of memorization she still wants to do tonight, but I think she has nailed down a lot of the most important reactions and how they work.
