Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Sammamish, WA Microbiology tutoring
We covered writing, balancing, and assigning chemical states to the five different types of reactions. The student and I also went over balancing redox reactions in both acidic and basic solutions. She grasped the material really quickly! She is going to finish the last few problems to be checked during our next meeting.

We covered X-linked inheritance, y linked, mitochondrial, and the way that they can be determined using a pedigree. She had trouble remembering some of the differences when they are compared to each other. She seemed attentive and positive about the material. I had her teach me the information and corrected her thinking along the way. I gave her a worksheet to work on.

We decided to review older material that the student had covered prior to starting sessions with me. We worked through problems in the chapter in his textbook about gases. The specific topics that we covered were the ideal gas law, Boyle's law, Charles' law, calculating kinetic energy of gas particles, calculating root mean square of gas particles, and calculating pressure changes in a manometer.

We developed Matlab code to perform support vector machines (SVM) classification (using libsvm functions, compiled as MEX libraries), using linear or Gaussian kernels. We wrote routines to perform n-fold cross validation and established approaches to logically tune SVM parameters, which avoided overfitting.

We did a brief review of kinematics, forces and Newton's laws, and work. We discussed kinetic and static friction, noting that kinetic is always equal to mu times the normal force while static has a maximum value of mu(static) times the normal force. We noted that work is equal to force times distance if the force is in the direction of motion, but otherwise we need to multiply by cos of the angle between them. We went through an example that had two masses connected by a rope draped over a pulley with one on a ramp and the other dangling off the side, and included friction. We noted that to calculate the work done by friction you would multiply by the force of friction by the distance traveled down the ramp. We talked about how to find the x and y components of vectors, and how to recombine them to find the total magnitude of the vector in question.
