Session Summaries by Differential Equations Tutors

Sammamish, WA Differential Equations tutoring
The student and I went over his math project, creating equations to make a model of the solar system. Then, I introduced some of the new topics he will be seeing in class soon - parabolic equations, axes of symmetry, vertices, and factoring. We reviewed FOILing expressions and then I showed him how factoring is doing somewhat of the same process backwards.

Today we covered scientific notation which is what the student is working on in class. She was absent when the went over the details so we went through her notes and worked on her worksheet that the teacher provided. The student did extremely well with this topic. She understands the rules and the steps involved in getting the right answer by moving the decimal point. She needs help sometimes with knowing which number goes in the numerator and which one goes in the denominator for word problems, but this will get better with the more problems she practices. We also re-visited her topic on negative exponents from the last session we had. We will continue to work on it each session to ensure she remembers the rules.

Tonight I met with the student for an hour to prep for a calculus exam tomorrow. We covered a broad range of topics that she expects to see on the exam, stopping to focus on volumes of solids of revolution. The student has a really strong math sense, and is really confident with the material - as long as she studies to get the short term refresher I think she'll do well on the exam tomorrow.

Today the student and I covered his test material which covered multiplication and division of exponents, division and multiplication of polynomials, exponential notation and he got a 93% which enables him now to take the test for real tomorrow. He is still a little uneasy about exponential notation but is getting more and more confident-I will continue to work with him tomorrow before his test! We also went back and corrected the two errors that he got on the test.

Today the student and I continued where we left off last week by discussing conic sections and their general equations. We discussed the sample problem from last time. We continued by reviewing circles and parabolas by having more general equations which would then have to be put in the standard forms for circles and parabolas. We then finished by introducing ellipses and explaining their properties and characteristics of their formulas. After a couple of more general practice problems involving completing the square, he seemed to understand writing these equations in their standard forms well. Next week we'll continue by doing a brief review and moving on to the final conic section, hyperbolas.
