Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had our first session today, and we took a few minutes to get acquainted by learning about each other's backgrounds and plans for the future. We got started on where exactly he was with the curriculum - his class was covering systems of equations and understanding how to solve for them through substitution and elimination. He needed attention in understanding how to add/ subtract/ multiply/ divide algebraic expressions as there were inconsistencies in how he solved these equations. I anticipate that this will take some time to get him up to speed, but it was encouraging to see him express a degree of determination in getting better. Given he knew what he wanted to do with his life (which is unusual for a high school student his age) and is motivated by this to succeed in school, I feel good about his willingness to put in the time and growing pains to get him caught up in any other deficiencies as well."
"We went over the math class today. The student he a little trouble grasping all the properties of exponents. After explaining briefly what each meant, she was able to do the problems and she had little trouble with it so I'm happy about that."
"Today we began with a review of all the topics that will be covered in the student's exam next week. I briefly explained each section before we finished the session by working through some practice problems. Topics covered included the fundamental theorem of calculus, the definition of an integral as an area under a curve, basic integrals, u-substitution, and various methods of finding volumes."
"Since the student had a quiz today, we started the session just reviewing homework together. I asked which problems gave her the most trouble and we solved them together. I also gave her a right brain/ left brain quiz (10 minutes) to help her see where she might struggle as she gets into higher math. We talked about strategies on test-taking and in problem solving. She asked for help with word problems, so I will bring a worksheet on that next visit. I told her about some fun math sites online to challenge her and give her extra practice in different concepts. We spent the remaining time moving forward to the next unit she will cover in her math class - geometry. She did some review from previous years on a math app, and then we worked some problems from her book in the next chapter."
"The student had an awesome level of focus today for our last session. We went through about half of his homework on foiling and functions and then moved on to review basic logarithms. We also tackled some advanced logarithmic expressions which he did really well with. He has learned a ton of new concepts and more importantly implemented various new approaches in problem solving and note taking that will help him do well in his future math and science classes."
"We went over some introductory topics in precalculus. Her background is different than most students and some algebra ideas were difficult for her. We will keep working on that in future sessions."
