Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed several probability concepts using the student's assigned problem set. He had some difficulties with how to interpret the information presented in the problems, so we worked on how to "translate" the information by drawing pictures and making tables. He has a great attitude toward the material and is a hard worker. We are going to follow up after dinner to finish up the concepts he wants to review."
"Today the student and I worked through a practice exam covering topics involving vectors, lines and planes, and calculus involving space curves."
"The student had an upcoming exam broken into two parts. The first half largely covered inequalities (interval notation, graphing inequalities) and solving systems of equations. We went over a quiz he took at the beginning of the school year to focus on topics he struggled to understand. We focused mostly on him practicing the types of problems he faced in homework and in class so that he becomes more comfortable with parts of the curriculum he feels most uncomfortable with. I emphasized to him that the best way to get better at something he struggles with is to commit more time to studying by doing practice problems regarding that specific topic. He became more comfortable with the topics we covered. Because my schedule made it difficult to meet with him again this week, I stayed longer so that we could at least cover the rest of the material tested in the second half of the exam, which was largely word problems on graphing inequalities as constraints to calculate maximum and minimum vertices. He had minor issues in reducing simple errors, but he did express unease in finding all of the constraints since there are so many to account for. I advised that he be as systematic and organized in his thinking, thus making it less likely for him to leave out any key details to include in his answers."
"Today the student took the placement test. He scored 47/50--very good! According to the test, he should be placed in algebra 1 class. The questions he got wrong were the questions regarding long division."
"We worked on recognizing patterns and sequences within numbers. Using the formula for the term and sum of an arithmetic sequence, we were able to complete the student's assignment and review the most recent quiz."
"During this session, a quiz review worksheet was completed in its entirety covering division of polynomials and adding/ subtracting of polynomials in preparation for the next day's quiz. In addition, chapter 3 of the SAT workbook was reviewed and homework given from it to be completed before next session."
