Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over problems involving equations of an ellipse. By the end of the session, the student demonstrated that she understood the work by solving the problems correctly."
"We reviewed concepts of trigonmetric identities and applied them to various practice problems in the text."
"We started the session off by finding the area of scalene triangles. I showed the student how to find the area without Heron's formula and told him not to bother with it, that he can just use law of sines/cosines to find the height of the triangle. Then we worked on parabolas. I gave him the definition of a parabola in terms of the focus and directrix. I showed him how this makes up the equation. We then took several parabola equations and found the focus, directrix, vertex, and axis, and we did the reverse: starting with the focus and directrix and finding the equation. We spent the last bit of the session on ellipses. I showed him how the coefficients are related to the vertices, the foci, and the geometry. He will work various review materials prior to our next meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday."
"I help the student strengthen concepts and skills using sine or cosine curves to model periodic phenomenon, such as temperature over years and daily tidal height. The student is more confident now in finding period, amplitude, phase shift and vertical shift to fit the given data and finding answers from the equations he set up."
"The student wrapped up her polar-coordinate unit with a lesson on converting complex numbers into trigonometric form and finding roots and powers of complex numbers. She picked up these concepts almost immediately, needing very little help on this lesson."
"I helped the student review for her midterm, reviewing problems with her involving zeros of polynomial functions and operations on functions, specifically composition. She has a good understanding, and I expect her to do well on her midterm."
