"Finished homework for area of a circle. Started working on segments of a circle, both area and arc length."
"Good second session. In the first half, we mostly went through the practice questions for geometry (calculating lateral and surface area of prisms and composite forms) and I was able to clarify a few things. We also discussed memorization techniques in preparation for a history quiz on US presidents the student has coming up. I encouraged the student to use different mnemonic devices and visualize the information in different ways. During the second half, we talked about general techniques for synthesizing information, specifically addressing higher-order questions from his history sections. I showed him that he could group the smaller, identification-based items by section and essay question, marking the corners or front side of each flashcard according to the higher-order answers to which the item might contribute. I reminded him to use the essay questions on his study guide and at the end of each section of the text to create these groups, and to keep those questions in mind as he read, took notes, and created flashcards. We will meet again Monday."
"We reviewed problems from page 42 of the school text. The student seems to be enjoying parts of Geometry and is progressing."
"Today we went over angle bisectors and there relationship to triangles. We learned how to find the centroid, orthocenter, and incenter of a triangle and how we can use these points of concurrency to determine the length of certain segments within a triangle. The student sometimes has difficulty making the connections between different concepts on her own and needs some explanation to help her see it. These are some new and difficult concepts we have been examining so this is not surprising. I would like to see her try and make some of these connections on her own as she becomes more familiar with the topics and concepts."
"We covered problems that were similar to the homework assignments that the student has. We covered similar triangles, which the student did very well with. We then covered right triangle trigonometry which the student also did well with. The homework questions should provide the student with practice before the exam that is next week. We will have another session next week to review for the exam."
"Today the student continued working on her summer math packet. This section was mostly over identifying direct variations (in the form of y=kx, where k is some constant) either by looking at the equation or looking at a graph. We also practiced writing equations in slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and standard form. We solved inequalities and graphed their solutions as well as checked whether or not given point values were solutions to inequalities. She had a positive attitude throughout the session. We were able to finish locating all of the needed key points on her world map for geography. We then began memorizing key points of North America and Africa. We went over previous work we had done and she was still able to label those locations correctly. Great session!"
