Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over her reading comprehension. Using an old text book, I had her read several short stories and articles. After each page I would ask her questions about what we had just read and have her give me short summaries. We also discussed advanced vocabulary words as we went. At the end of each reading we worked on the focus questions in the textbook. Overall the student did extremely well. She did a great job reading aloud. I think that with further practice on reading for comprehension of details and focusing on plot/main points she will become an even stronger reader!"
"We started the session by working on a practice 3rd grade reading test. We completed the first story which was a narrative about a young boy anticipating the first snow of the winter. The student continues to improve his fluency and was particularly showing much improvement on using the text to support his answers in any written response question. He scored 100% on this portion of the test with minimal help from me. We then completed two stories together. The student completed the final story on his own which was a level 4 and he scored 100%. I asked that he complete one story on his own for the next session."
"We continued to work on critical reading skills, including prediction, deduction, and character analysis. We also continued working on directly responding to and properly identifying the question asked. Finally, we discussed how to properly formulate an answer by using question language in the response."
"I was excited to hear the student did well on her Math test. We have been working on focusing on what the homework and questions are actually asking, since she tends to skip around pages while she's working, but I think she's gotten better. We also completed her social studies review of early colonial history and the French and Indian War."
"I was given prep time to email his teachers, review his class notes for the exam, create a lesson plan for the science test on protein synthesis, and review the chapter in The Giver and the article on social constructs. We focused first on reviewing an article that the student had for a social studies lesson on social constructs. We worked on editing his response. The second task we worked on was his reading response to "The Giver," Chapters 21-23. He had not finished the entire reading, so we could not complete the discussion, but we made points for him to watch out for. Lastly, we studied protein synthesis in plants for his science test. I spoke with his teacher and found additional resources to help him understand his class notes."
"I was so happy today when the student told me she got 100% on her recent math test! Today, we worked on some more ratio worksheets, primarily simplifying them. She has a pretty good handle on ratios. Going forward, we will do more work with fractions and move into slope. In reading, we discussed the book she is reading, and she completed a comprehension worksheet with good results."
