Recent Sacramento German Tutoring Session Notes

German Tutoring review by Dorit in Sacramento, CA
This session was designed to introduce the student to common adjectives and their opposites. The student engaged in the exercise with great enthusiasm and enjoyed completing the task. When he got stuck, he would ask for help in German, thus demonstrating that he is able to apply communicative strategies appropriately. As a homework, the student was encouraged to pair objects and apply opposite adjectives.

German Tutoring review by Molly in Sacramento, CA
The student has another German test this week, so we worked on reviewing her grammar points for this test. We also looked at her new material, which involved putting verbs into the past perfect tense. This test is very context-heavy as far as choosing the correct prepositions and conjugations. I try to work with her on ways to "check out" the answer without context, such as looking for key verbs and endings that will indicate what's needed.

German Tutoring review by Charles in Sacramento, CA
The study for finals continues. We reviewed all topics covered since January (when we started together), which happily coincides with the material on the test. Core topics are noun/article endings, verb conjugations, and question/interrogative words. Since we meet on Thursday as well, I assigned no work.

German Tutoring review by Michael in Sacramento, CA
Met and had my first session with the student. He filled me in with what his class has covered so far this year, it has been mostly review up to this point. I mentioned to him that flashcards can be a big help to re-organize and give yourself a fresh outlook on studying. They're also easy to carry with you to study on the go. We worked through some grammar from his textbook which covered adjective endings and all the different scenarios for using them. The student seemed very capable of following and understanding the grammar lesson and said he felt confident about the material. Overall, it was a good first session and I am looking forward to future sessions with him!

German Tutoring review by Amanda in Sacramento, CA
We reviewed last sessions homework of numbers, colors, and week days. We then went over his vocabulary list of irregular verbs from his course. I defined the verbs through sentences in German and he had to know the meaning based off context. For new material, we went over shapes, a reading comprehension with questions and answers, and family tree vocabulary. We then did fill in the blank work with the differences in instead, but, and or. Extra practice was more listening comprehension through music and to review vocabulary taught in the lesson.

German Tutoring review by William in Sacramento, CA
The student is doing fine. Right now we are working on understanding reflexive pronouns, as well as doing a bit of review about the difference between direct and indirect objects, working with the dative, etc. I also explained to him about how the dative can be used in German to express feelings, pain and pleasure sensations, as well as observations. We still need to work more on making the difference between dative and accusative. If we can get these very important concepts down, I feel like the student will really do great.
