Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we reviewed using while loops, if/else-if/else statements, strings, and the prompt function. We also started talking about variable scope towards the end of the session. The student still seems excited to learn the material and use it in the real world. It makes tutoring him very enjoyable. As a little challenge, I told him to look into for loops and arrays, concepts that we have not yet covered together."
"What concepts did you cover specifically? Completed function (palindromes) and started implementation of function (name_counts).What was the student struggling with most? The student is keeping up nicely. She just needs to work more on her keyboards skills. What was the student's attitude toward the material that was reviewed? She was active and productive through the session. Did you include any strategies or study skills in this session? I taught her more debugging techniques."
"The student and I went over Python syntax, and how to apply it to a number of practice problems given to her by her professor. We spent most of the session on for loops and while loops, and spent a bit of time at the end talking about exactly how Python interprets boolean variables. Over the next few days, the student should review the code we wrote (particularly the function that searches for a set number of primes) until she feels familiar enough with the syntax to recreate it without a reference."
"We did the initial setup and tutorial for the Squeak/SmallTalk language. This was a general get-to-know session with a new language. We have another session coming up tonight to work on the first project."
