Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session was a review of concepts for the student's exam on Friday. We focused on mechanisms of the major reagents from chapters 9-12 as well as important concepts from exams 1 and 2."
"During this session we went over center of mass. The student seems to have a good grasp on concepts. Overall this session went well."
"We covered cell signaling - channels, pumps, voltage-gated, ligand-gated, cAMP, IP3, secondary messengers, structure and functions of channels."
"The student was preparing for a chemistry final, so we reviewed all of the major topics listed in her review packet. This included stoichiometry, finding empirical and molecular formulae, understanding different types of intra- and intermolecular bonds, periodic trends, types of solids, gas laws, and various applications of atomic and mass numbers. The student's biggest struggle was motivation, as she admitted that this topic is not interesting to her, but it was obvious that she wanted to do well on her test anyway. We had a few laughs over some of her rather ludicrous guesses, and we discussed better strategies for improving knowledge in the future (like actually asking for help when she doesn't know something). In addition to a few mnemonics, I also left her with some notes detailing a few of the procedures, and a list of additional topics to study on her own to ensure mastery. Overall, I think it was an extremely productive session and I have high hopes for her success on the final."
"We continued working on orbitals/energy levels and valence electrons. We went over the homework she completed after our last meeting. We moved on to redox reactions. She remembered hearing the terms from last summer, so we reviewed the definitions and the rules for assigning oxidation numbers. We worked through multiple examples assigning oxidation numbers and writing the half reactions. She is going to go through the last few slides from chapter 4 on her own and let me know if she has questions. I'm going to send her some practice problems for redox reactions and concentration/dilution stoichiometry."
"I worked with the student on continuing our ACT prep for the Saturday test. Because we have already worked with every section on the test, we did a couple practice passages from each section to brush up on all the sections and strategies we previously covered. He did a great job, and I believe he is ready for the test on Saturday."
