Session Summaries by Social Studies Tutors

Round Rock, TX Social Studies tutoring
The student and I met and continued preparing for her upcoming humanities test. We reviewed the many aspects of U.S. History from 1800-1860. Events we reviewed included the Missouri Compromise, Mexican-American War, Compromise of 1850, Louisiana Purchase, and Thoreau. She completed a timeline, and we discussed how events on the timeline were related and how many of the events were a direct result of another action or event. She also was able to connect philosophical movements of the time, such as romanticism and transcendentalism, to events and people on the timeline. As she worked on the timeline, I quizzed her on the events and challenged her to explain the connections.

The student and I worked on both Greek and Roman history the past two sessions--he has an excellent memory for historical events. We examined and he responded to questions from Livy's History of Rome, and how the republic evolved. He answered questions for his homework and study guide, as well as saved information on his online flashcard app. He is doing great!

During today's lesson, the student and I did a number of exercises that focused on the active reading of a historical passage. We worked through different ways to interact with a text by highlighting and summarizing, as well as asking questions of the reading passage itself. I really enjoyed today's session, and I think that she is really progressing well so far in her ability to glean the main ideas of a historical text. I will email her a homework assignment that will be a follow-up to the reading strategies we explored today.

The student and I went through two chapters on the First World War-- a general introduction to the outbreak of the war and a chapter on America's entry and contribution. We will continue to go over the war for next week's test, adding a chapter on life in America during 1917 and 1918. We were also able to go over some algebra. I will continue doing this when we get a chance, but I think it would be best to prepare her for next semester's business math class, which emphasizes data and statistics. She is starting The Great Gatsby in English while also doing some types of AP nonfiction readings. I will help her here as needed.

We spent the session reading a passage from the student's history text on the expansion of trade and commerce during Europe's Middle Ages. We covered such issues as increased food production and the consequent population expansion, the formation of guilds and their influences, and new business practices that led to greater economic development.
