Because this was our first session together, we began by discussing both Student 1's and Student 2's priorities, and setting general, communication-based learning goals, that correspond to everyday activities, and situations they're likely to experience on their trip. From there, we dove into greetings, and culturally appropriate forms of address. Since a few of the words involved in greeting people have pronunciations that are not at all intuitive for native speakers of English, Student 2 asked if we could go over the general pronunciation rules, for French words. We went over the various sound that different letters, and combinations of letters make in French, with a special attention to cases where those sounds are dramatically different from those, that the same letters would make, in English. We then used a French comic book to demonstrate and practice pronunciation.

We had small conversation to begin. Then I used TCF book level 1 to check the student's knowledge from high school with exercises. Then we went to review some conjugation, grammar, and vocabulary basics. I'll follow this pattern for the next classes and in a couple of weeks we'll focus more on specific vocabulary and tourist situations (role play). She has a better pronunciation than she thinks she has! She is enthusiastic and I know she is going to improve fast.
