The student and I met this afternoon to continue working on his "Othello" essay. His professor had given an extension and had also provided a general outline for him to follow. After reading his draft, I offered suggestions where some points could be clarified, expanded, or omitted. One of the comments that his professor had made was that the essay lacked coherence. I suggested that strengthening the thesis would make it easier to recognize how the ideas fit together and, hopefully, build upon one another to strengthen the overall unity. I also pointed out that the conclusion was actually a stronger, more definitive statement than the thesis and recommended that he consider making the thesis "mirror" the conclusion. We also needed to lengthen the essay, and attempted to do this by elaborating on some of the scenes from the film "Omkara" and including some of the language from Shakespeare's play. There was still some editing needed when we decided to wrap up. Though I will not be able to meet him in person before he submits the final draft of this essay, I did offer to help him look for quotes from the play if he felt he needed textual material to add specifics. We have no date set for a next meeting at this time.

We started with a writing warm up. We then moved on to grammar talking about the possessive use of apostrophe's in writing. We then worked on a creative writing exercise and created a comic. I was the scribe while the student told me the story. I found that after we finished our first draft, he wanted to add more details. This is exciting because he is starting to revise on his own, which is great improvement.

The student and I worked on his Latin class assignment for his portfolio. Because the original assignment had issues with academic dishonesty, we agreed that it was best to start from scratch. After explaining to him the concepts of peer-review and thorough research, we read about Caesar's life until he decided he was interested in a topic. We settled on the crossing of the Rubicon and what brought about the Civil War. Today, we managed to get through the first two paragraphs, and we will hopefully conclude on Monday.

In this session, the student and I began with review. Then we did some activities geared towards improving his descriptive writing. We read sample passages from books he is familiar with (such as Harry Potter) and discussed the descriptive power of the writing, adjective use, choice of language, etc. Then we brought up randomly selected images from the online collection of the National Portrait Gallery and he practiced his writing by making up descriptions of the individuals in the portraits. Finally, we discussed an upcoming quiz I am putting together to test his absorption of materials and identify areas we need to review.

The student edited her paper. She still needed help with using conversational language versus academic language in her papers. Yet she was able to reword sentences and phrases to an academic level when they were pointed out to her.
