The student and I worked on continuing his knowledge of fractions. He has made a lot of progress in remembering how to add fractions with unlike denominators. I introduced working on subtraction with fractions, which he was able to pick up very quickly due to the similarities with adding fractions. On our next session we will work on mixed worksheets with both adding and fractions to ensure that he has a good understanding.

Today was my first tutoring session with the student. We first went over the classes he is taking and the notes that were left by his prior tutor with regards to homework he needs to finish. We then started with his math homework. We worked on normal distribution, z scores, and means. We were able to complete all of it except for the last problem which required data on his graphing calculator, which was unavailable. We went over the notes left over by his prior tutor, and he assured that all the assignments on that note were completed already.

During this session, the student and I worked on some homework regarding time, rate, and distance. The student was fine working on the basic problems where the units were the same, but she got a bit confused when it came to converting measurements (e.g. finding how many miles we went per second given a certain speed in mph). We did several exercises with those, and the student grasped it by the end. We also mapped out some of the problems visually, drawing clocks in order to illustrate that after a full hour we've gone the full distance, after half an hour we've gone half the distance, after a quarter of an hour we've gone one quarter of a distance, etc. We also made charts that were very helpful to the student. We set up a plan for her week leading up to our next session.

All he had to do was a math worksheet. I pushed him to follow all of the instructions and write out the translated equation before solving. Once he grasped the concept he was very excited and seemed confident in his new mastery. Excellent session!

The student has a test next week. Worked on a couple of worksheets. First was using Descartes's rule of signs to evaluate the possible number of zeros for a function. Then spent most of our time finding zeros using factoring methods, as well as synthetic division. He did a pretty good with it even though some of the questions were tough.
