Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Finished math section of practice test 2 and then completed science section. We then began the reading section, which we got about half way through. As of now, the student appears to be hovering around her target score, but with a few more weeks preparations hopefully she will fall safely above this number. We will finish up practice test 2 in our last session."
"The student read with the best fluency ever for Nate the Great and the Phony Clue. He did not mix up articles and used voice inflection at the end of sentences. The only minor mistake was saying "I" for "It" at the beginning of two sentences in 48 pages of reading. He read the book in 30 minutes. I was very pleased with his progress. He read 11 pages from his book Diary of a Wimpy Kid for the second half of the session. He made several small mistakes, mainly because there was a lot of new vocabulary."
"Today the student and I reviewed polynomials. He's been having trouble grasping these concepts. We started by graphing quadratic equations. He took to this material better than he did when we first covered it. We went back over factoring polynomials and the significance of this process. I was encouraged that he was completing this easier than he had prior. He also took to the process of completing the square to factor a polynomial fairly quickly. The student definitely knows the material in this type of unit, he just needs to practice it all until it is second nature. One area that I think he needs further time with is the coordinate plane and what it represent; i.e. all points on it have two components, etc. "
"Today we worked on gradient and slope. I also went over a quiz she took we are still working on, helping her use the positive and negatives signs correctly. She is doing better, but some mistakes on her tests can still be avoided."
"Today we worked on vocabulary and Math. We reviewed strategies for the analogies and synonyms sections. She is improving her vocabulary and elimination skills. I timed her on two sections and seemed to grasp the concepts after review, so we will continue to work on timed drills. She is starting to remember the vocabulary we are reviewing and is doing well making eliminating and making educated guesses."
"This session went pretty well. The assignment was an exercise in debugging practices. We went through the lesson together, and I supplemented the lab from time to time with additional explanations. I also answered questions as they arose. The student is a gifted coder. Her problem-solving skills are well-developed, which isn't a surprise given her major."
