Tutoring review by Alana in Roslindale, MA
The student is showing progress with both the new material and the basic skills (factoring, combining like terms, distributing, etc.) that we are covering. We reviewed the first 4 methods of taking derivatives today (basic, product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule). The student displays progress and familiarity with the methods. We then covered the method of taking derivatives with implicit differentiation and with logarithmic or exponential functions. We now have 7 ways to take derivatives. We also discussed using implicit differentiation to solve related rates problems. The student is moving forward and stays positive. We discussed some ways to remember each method, and she has notes and work from me to practice with. I also provided her with problems to practice for solving logarithms and exponentials. This is the first week that we will be meeting twice. I believe this will be very beneficial because she and I can discuss the methods and clarify her notes before she attempts the homework. Then, when we meet again later this weekend, we can discuss any issues that arose while completing her homework problems.

Tutoring review by Leah in Roslindale, MA
We looked at the unit circle and trigonometric functions of the two basic types of right triangles (30-60-90 and 45-45-90) and the 0, 90, 180, 270, 360 degrees. The student did a good job solving the trig problems I made for her. We also got to look at arithmetic and geometric sequences. I told her to be sure to memorize the formulas for the series and sequences and know when to use them.

I am SO PROUD OF THIS STUDENT! She got 102 on her surface area quiz!! Today we worked on the volume of pyramids and triangular prisms and she got every question right on the first try! I challenged her with a surface area question that required the Pythagorean theorem and that was a bit challenging so we are going to review the Pythagorean theorem again on Monday. But she should be SUPER stoked right now!!

Tutoring review by Lora in Roslindale, MA
We started with a worksheet: finding facts, determining if it was a perfect, abundant, or deficient number (this was easy and seemed enjoyable for him). Then, the student had the super lengthy multiplication problems to do (i.e.: 870355 x 71). We took a break from those problems to do his word problems, which seemed a bit easier and he did well with them.

Tutoring review by Valerie in Roslindale, MA
It was wonderful to meet the girls. Both were wonderful to work with. I worked with both girls simultaneously on their grade level math. Student O (6th grade) was working integers and understanding how to add negatives and positives. This is a tricky concept when first introduced and can often cause problems in higher math subjects. The primary thing to remember is that when she is adding a positive and a negative number the answer can be either negative or positive. We worked on a trick to remember: If adding a + and a - first find the difference between the two numbers and then keep the sign of the bigger number. Ex: -20 + 5. Difference (20-5=15) the higher number is 20 and is a negative so keep that sign. -20+5=-15. Student N (2nd grade) was working on multiple digit subtraction with borrowing. Her adding and subtraction skills seem to be on point. She is able to realize that she has to borrow from the tens column so she can subtract the ones column. However, she was not marking the change in the tens column and would then try to subtract from the original number. We talked about making sure to mark our problems so we know where we are. We worked the problems on a separate piece of paper so that she had room. Her worksheet from school was in smaller writing and there was not a lot of room. She was beginning to get the idea. I will bring more practice with me on Friday to try to lock down this concept.
