Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered writing, specifically letter formation. We also read most of a chapter in his Health book about muscles."
"The student read short passages and wrote the main idea for each passage. He also practiced spelling and vocabulary. He wrote sentences using various vocabulary words. It was a productive session."
"We worked on identifying the main idea of smaller sections of the reading. We also worked on adding and subtracting money, and I provided suggestions for additional practice."
"Covered general strategies for writing well, in addition to editing an existing draft. The student is making good progress on all fronts, but one item of improvement relies on the development of detail in anecdotes. She is enthusiastic and diligent. I left her with instruction on completing additional drafts."
"Discussed homework reading assignment and brainstorming for student's personal narrative writing. Discussed vignette approach to memoir and read example. Discussed metaphor and extended metaphor as applied to poetry example, memoir, and "Speak." Reviewed "Speak" discussing the author's use of lists, nicknames, tone, and allusions to writers and painters. Reviewed vocabulary in "Speak.""
"During our session this week, he completed the writing component of the children's book for his Social Studies class. This project is heavily weighted in the class grade, so he was especially concerned with doing the best work possible. As his teacher had already stressed in her review of his proposal, the incorporation of key historical details relating to the American Revolution is the primary goal of the project. Since he is so creative, it was not difficult to create a story that did so. We also worked on simplifying sentences and avoiding unspecific words like "great" and "awesome," which he has made too ample use of in the past. He continues to improve."
