Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Rosemead, CA Physiology tutoring
During today's session with the student, we spent most of the time reviewing an old practice exam he had and discussing topics he didn't feel too confident about. The first couple of questions covered the topics relating to heart murmurs, electrophysiology, and conduction abnormalities. He had a good understanding of these concepts, but was a bit confused about EKGs and how to determine what each lead identified, which we spent some time reviewing. Towards the end of the session, we went over pulmonary function tests since it was going to be covered in his quiz and it wasn't presented in class yet. He has improved drastically throughout our time together and continues to do well in the class.

The student and I continued to work on Algebra and science in preparation for her upcoming 8th grade classes. We reviewed the product and quotient rules of exponents, and began working with the power of a power rule of exponents, power of a product rule, the negative rule of exponents, and zero rule of exponents. I assigned her homework to review the new rules we covered. In physics, we reviewed her homework that covered dimensional analysis and talked about chemistry, introducing the concepts and terms: atoms, molecules, elements, compounds, the periodic table, pore substances, mixtures, homogeneous and heterogeneous. Her assignment was to find examples of each one of those new terms. We also talked about the law of conservation of mass and the law of conservation of energy.

The student and I did an activity on the seasons and phases of the moon. I had her tell me everything she knew about the phases of the moon and try to predict their cause. We used a flashlight and styrofoam spheres to model the sun, moon, and earth and experiment with the positioning required to create the different phases. As part of this, we also covered the conditions that caused solar and lunar eclipses. I was happy to see how interested she was in the topic. She asked several supplementary questions, some of which were very insightful. I also had her work out how the change in the seasons worked, and we discussed some common misconceptions that people had.

The student and I focused on the first lesson of Chapter 2 today. We spent a lot of time going over organelles. I had him read the lesson out loud and asked periodic questions. I also made him watch two YouTube videos that explained each organelle. Finally, I asked lesson review questions. For homework, I have asked him to re-read Chapter 2 and make flashcards for the vocabulary words. I will also send him more lesson review questions.

The student and I started today by working on his math homework, which focused on the equations of lines and putting lines into point-slope form or slope-intercept form. Once he got moving, I was impressed to see that he was quite comfortable with the material and could explain almost all of the reasoning behind certain processes. Afterwards, we spent time organizing his materials for his science lab report and setting up the rough draft of his conclusion.

The student and I talked more about the different parts of the cell. We talked a little bit about each organelle, what it does and why it's important to the cell. The egg shell wasn't completely dissolved for our experiment yet, so we couldn't continue on with it. We replaced the vinegar, and we'll work with it again next time. We also talked a little bit about geometry. She didn't remember much about how to find area, surface area, or volume, or what the terms meant, so we went over the definitions of each term, as well as the formulas for different figures. She had a little bit of trouble with surface area, but I think that with some more practice she'll be more comfortable with it.
