Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student read two short stories, both nonfiction. His reading fluency and reading comprehension is improving. Next session, I would like to work on spelling and writing complete sentences for responses."
"Student 1 and I went over vocabulary words, and introduction to the English Test, Math Homework (Addition/Subtraction), and Science Homework (Solids/Liquids/Gases). I will provide further preparation with the test in the coming weeks. Student 2 and I did Math Homework (Tally Marks; Numbers). We will begin work on a vocabulary list in the coming weeks."
"We started by doing two pages from the student's workbook looking at suffixes. He had no trouble matching the appropriate suffix to their corresponding words. He also easily used the appropriate word (which used suffixes) to fill in the blank on the other page. We then moved on to a new Goosebumps book (the first one had been checked out). He has made some really huge improvements on his reading flow and his ability to sound out words. We were able to get through an entire chapter and, towards the end, he was able to read two and a half pages without stopping once. I can tell he feels a sense of accomplishment when he reads steadily and he is engaged in the book. He still needs work on some pronunciation but guesses much less. On large, unknown words, he does look at the beginning part of the word and tries to guess at the rest of the word based on what the first sound is. When I help him break the word apart, he can sound out the words and moves along well. He has developed enough flexibility that he has started adding inflection to his reading. I suggested that he check out the book we were reading. He made a comment about how he would like to read the entire book, and I think that his confidence would greatly increase by accomplishing that feat. I am very happy with his progress so far."
"We covered comprehension. The student was still struggling with answering questions in detail. The student enjoys learning new material. The student is looking forward to reading and discussing the ending of "Almost Home.""
"We covered decoding CVC words, focusing on short vowels, which was more of a review. We also worked on blending initial consonants to decode four-letter words like star and skip. Lastly, we worked on reading a nonfiction text focusing on sight words. The student did great in regards to Sunday's concepts. She has retained most of the skills she acquired in the spring."
"We covered definitions of parts of speech and more vocabulary from 1984 by George Orwell. We then reviewed reading strategies of "playing a movie in your head" while reading a novel, looking up a word to understand meaning not just being familiar, and questioning while reading."
