"We talked about the student's scores on her previous attempt at the test, which were largely very good if not great. But she did have some topics and sections she could work on, notably the critical reading section and the essay. She attempted one practice essay, and then we went over what she had done. Her essay was strong, but there were a couple of things she needed to work on to improve it from a good to a great essay. While her examples were very good choices, their relationship was left to the reader to decipher, despite their having an obvious connection. We worked on building that connection, and discussed strategies for making sure she includes it in the essay. We also looked at a critical reading passage, and discussed strategies for figuring out the tone of the passage and of certain sentences. She will work on a couple more passages before our next meeting."
"The student and I began by discussing the practice test he took for homework. We worked on a few problems that he answered incorrectly and talked about his essay. He did very well on this exam overall, and he should be very proud of scoring a perfect 800 on the math section for the first time! Next, we talked about where he stands at this point and what his plans and goals should be moving forward. We agreed that the student will take at least 4 more timed full-length practice tests over the next few weeks. Finally, we worked on some function problems together. He has become much more comfortable with function problems, and he did a great job on these. For homework, the student will complete another timed full-length practice test. In our next session we will review this test and, afterward, practice active reading strategies for passage-based reading."
"This was my last session with the student before his SAT. He completed two practice sessions for homework, so we spent the majority of time going over the problems he missed. I also brought additional math questions to target a few problem areas, especially in geometry. Overall, the student has made a lot of improvements and is feeling more and more confident about the test. We concluded the session by going over a few test strategies and reminders for the actual day."
