Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student has a strong, discerning skill set to draw from when it comes to the critical reading section, and rarely misses the questions she gets to, but needs help with time management. Her most recent practice test score is otherwise quite good - 660 or higher in writing, 650 in math, and 590 in critical reading. Again, her lower score from critical reading was mainly due to spending too much time on sentence completion and failing to reach some of the passage-based questions as a result. We are continuing to hone sentence completion strategies, particularly with the single-blank variety, so that she is able to answer them more quickly, as her instinct is already leading her to the correct answer 90% of the time. We will also address essay skills and strategies at our next meeting on Friday."
"This was our first meeting. We spent a bit of time going over the general structure of the test, although the student had a solid understanding of this already. The balance of the time we spent completing 2 critical reading sections. (Reading and writing are the sections that the student has the most trouble with.) We reviewed general strategy for these sections, and I tried to help the student incorporate "active reading" and analytical thinking into the way that she reads (e.g., understanding the tone of the passage, the structure, the relationship between passages, etc.). We also studied vocabulary, and we're keeping a running list of words that the student doesn't know. Since English is not the student's first language, she has a bit of trouble, but her vocabulary is very good. I assigned her 2 reading sections, 1 writing section, and vocabulary for homework. We will review all of this next session, and we'll focus a bit more on reading."
"We began by going over an advanced algebra question that the student had difficulty with at the end of the last session. In math, we discussed sectors, arc length, difficult angle geometry questions, geometric sequences, and counting principles. She had also taken a practice reading section, which she scored very well on. She continues to have difficulty with vocabulary. We made a new list of vocabulary for her to study. Before our next session, she will take a full-length practice test, timed, with the essay."
