"The student's teacher gave the students a very long pre-calculus packet to complete by May 2nd. It deals with drawing graphs and recognizing local minima and maxima, where graphs are increasing and decreasing, and where graphs are concave up or concave down. We made it through a couple pages of the packet together, but we moved a bit slow because I was making sure the student was coming up with the answers herself rather than copying my work."
"We went over sequences and series, including finding recursive and explicit formulas and finding sums of arithmetic and geometric sequences. We covered the meaning of n and the general concepts of sequences and series. We also spent a good deal of time talking about general academic planning and college applications."
"Today we discussed the definition of a derivative from a limits standpoint using the difference quotient. We calculated derivatives using this definition given a certain point on the function. We also went ahead a little to calculate derivatives in the much simpler method the student will be using in calculus. We briefly discussed questions she had on thermal physics and p-V cycles, and talked about torque."
"We spent most of today doing complex parabolic motion problems. We finished about one and a half of them. The student understands the majority of the material on a basic level. We ended the day by looking at vectors, and I don't think he'll have many issues with the topic."
"Today we continued working on lines, algebraically and geometrically. We performed exercises that involved getting the equation of a line, finding its slope and y-intercept, and perpendicular lines. I assigned homework for the weekend."
"The student and I covered a lot of material today. I think we are starting to catch up with his syllabus and soon we can start looking ahead to get him ready for his lectures. I really appreciate his attention and hard work. We reviewed some basics of fractions and re-covered functions as well as domain and range. Importantly as well we talked about study habits and reviewed his syllabus. Progress continues. I am looking forward to our next session as we continue to master functions."
