Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Our session this evening was the most productive yet. The student was engaged and fully responsive for the full time. As I had asked at the end of our last session, he had reviewed the Vocabulary 1 section at the end of the textbook's chapter 2, and he was fully prepared with recall of almost all of the items. We then looked at the newer vocabulary. We practiced and exercised it thoroughly, including exercises from the textbook, repetition, and questions and answers. He is "buying in" to his study of French, it seems to me, and it is a delight to see him progress."
"The student had a French project that we worked on today. It was a group project with a shared google doc. It was about half in French and half in English and was going to be presented as a PowerPoint, with the group taking turns reading their slides. I went over the French with her for spelling and grammar. We had to describe the weather in Haiti during each season. There was also a section about natural disasters in French, which featured floods, hurricanes, and disease. This was definitely the most challenging part to translate, but it consisted of simple sentences that had technically already been mostly translated. After we finished the project, we went over some grammar exercises that were on her school website."
"We covered mostly French vocab, where we worked on the synonyms and antonyms of different adjectives, as well as worked with the translation of the words and their spelling. The student was struggling the most with spelling. She was very open to learning and very good at retaining information, whether it was a new word being learned or the translation. During the session, I focused more on writing words down, then going a little further and finding the translation, and after that finding a synonym or an antonym for it. Since it was the first session, I would like to see how much she will succeed in her upcoming quiz, and then I will decide on extra practice I could leave with her. I will be able to see the grade progress on the upcoming session."
"This evening was my first session with the student; she and I spoke about what her weaknesses are in French class, which are mainly spelling and pronunciation. She seems to pick up on concepts after I work with her on them, and then it seems that she is better able to do them on her own without as much help. The student does make note cards and says they help her a lot, though, which is great."
"First I helped the student with a worksheet on articles. After the worksheet, I quizzed her to make sure she understood the whole concept of articles. After several attempts, she got it. Then I quizzed her on adjectives, as she told me she has a quiz on Friday. She knew the adjectives very well. I wrote down her list of adjectives in my own notebook so that I can create a worksheet for her the next time I see her."
"The student very much brought his A-game to tutoring tonight! He tore through the material tonight: first, conjunctions and infinitives in relation to the subjunctive; then, indirect statement, which he blew completely out of the water. Excellent work tonight."
