Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered Mendelian Genetics in this session. This included Meiosis, Oogenesis and Spermatogenesis, Mendelian Genetics and probabilities as well as codominance, incomplete dominance and independent assortment. The student showed a deep understanding of the material and completed all of the practice questions correctly."
"Yesterday, the student and I spent a comprehensive session focusing on coordinate geometry. For the first hour, we went over line equations and ways to extrapolate slope and y intercepts. I then went through the 5 different types of questions that she will most likely have to deal with on the assessment relating to what we went over. For the next half hour we worked on distance formula, and how it can be used in equations to find area and volume (i.e. the problem gives you two points on opposite ends of a circle and asks you the area of the circle). We finished with a practice test from her book. The test was 20 questions long and was all math based. Next week we will work on the writing/essay portion of the test."
"We began the session by going through the list of words that the student has been practicing. She did very well, so we will begin a new list on Monday. We then moved on to a reading passage that she did very well with. She answered 6 of 8 comprehension questions correctly. We focused on listening comprehension for the second half of the lesson. I read out loud to her, and she answered questions about the material that I read. We have been stopping periodically to clarify vocabulary, etc. Next week, I will switch over to the format that she will see on the test where the entire passage is read at once."
"We started with the SAT Math section and went over a practice test. I asked the student to try to solve the questions alone. When she has all the proper tools, or when the question is more logic than math based, she doesn't need my help. The way she approaches the problems is already perfect."
"We covered a review of his critical reading test results from last week. I went over the strategies for that part of the test, and he worked out of the ISEE prep book. He did quite a number of passages and got the majority of them correct. He had a very positive attitude and worked diligently. His results on this last test were much more in line with what he had hoped to get. We also went over practice quantitative comparisons that he did for homework."
"The student and I concentrated on reviewing her personal strengths and challenges. We identified some challenge areas to review, especially in Math, and came up with a plan to address them. We also went through her Math diagnostic test and worked through a few of the test problems to evaluate her skills."
"Today we met to continue our coverage of SAT Physics material. The next chapter was an introduction to quantum physics. Much of the material was familiar to her. We spent time reviewing this material and contextualizing it to the SAT. I also referenced some applications in real life. One major focus of this chapter was vocabulary, since there were a number of topics covered."
"Today, we covered the remainder of Algebra in SAT Math, practicing fractions, percentages, and integers. The student was a lot more comfortable with word problems today, which we practiced a lot of, and in general seems to be grasping Math concepts well. I offered her some conversion tips, and formulas for ratio problems and combinations. I asked her to go through and practice Geometry in her SAT prep book before our next session. We also continued to practice Critical Reading, and I gave her harder questions this time. She found some of the harder words challenging, but I helped her work through questions and identify what some unfamiliar words meant, as well as giving her a link to an online SAT Vocabulary list. I asked her to practice more passage-based questions in her own time."
"Final lesson of SAT preparation. The student is ready for the spring SATs and has made significant improvement in all sections. Techniques and strategies have been learned completely. Practiced a final math section and covered a few specific concepts as they came up."
"The student and I spent the lesson doing Form B of a practice admissions test. Overall, he is doing well - he got 9 out of 45 problems wrong. For the future, I will mix in worksheets with 6th and 7th grade word problems in with the material. For homework, I assigned him the 8th grade problems section of the test to do an initial assessment of his knowledge of the material."
"This was our first session. We spent time going over introductions, goals, expectations, and so on. We then spent the entire lesson going over the SAT format, the best ways to study, test-taking skills, and finally the essay section. We went over how to craft an effective essay, the rubric, examples of good and bad essays, and making outlines, then started brainstorming examples that could be used for support in essays. I left him with some notes and a practice exam to take. Overall, this was a very good first session."
"The session went very well. She is consistently a pleasure to work with. Overall, her scores are still showing signs of improvement. Today, we focused on reading in order to shore up her rising scores. I look forward to continuing with our next session!"
