Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed her work on human body systems to study for her test. She got almost everything correct on the first attempt. We also reviewed some world geography in preparation for her assessment test. She had a great knowledge of those study questions as well"
"Our final session began with a review of grammar mechanics and continued with a timed post-test. Time did not seem an issue for the student, and her raw score was very high on every sample section. We isolated a few small problem areas and addressed them before the end of the session."
"This was my second time meeting with the student. She had worked on the word list we had started before and we developed a strategy for working on the sentence completions she had trouble with on the SAT. First she reads the sentence without looking at the answers, then she comes up with her own words that would work in the blanks, finally she looks through the answers to eliminate those that don't make sense. I also advised her when going through practice tests to keep a log of any difficult questions."
"We reviewed our third vocab list, reviewed missed problems in 2 sections of writing and reading, and reviewed the top 2 most frequent types of grammar problems. We then laid out a study strategy to follow until test day."
"We reviewed some practice AP essays that the student had written, and identified flaws in reasoning as well as style. We're working toward being less vague and having a clear, strong thesis statement with strong supporting evidence."
"We talked about how it is probably time to pull out the student's flashcards to start targeting specific pieces of information that she needs to memorize. I gave her a little overview of the research on the best ways to use flashcards effectively. We spent the rest of the time on federalism and the difference between block and categorical grants. We spent the most time on Medicaid, which is the biggest area of grants and is the best illustration for any essay question. She will send me photos of her 2nd trimester final this week so that I can go over it in detail and figure out what else we need to study. We will also start with techniques for multiple choice questions, because it is possible to get a much higher score on that section even with some gaps in information."
