Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started the session with some short phonics books, and then practiced the student's new spelling words, which all had "oo" in them. She spelled all 15 words correctly. We read "The Emperor's New Clothes" for the rest of the session."
"We reviewed the student's reading journal assignment from last session. She wrote about the book "Chicks," that we read during our previous session. She wrote even more than she was assigned in the journal and correctly answered the questions. We corrected some spelling and grammatical errors in her writing. At this point it seems that she has a core base of words that she feels comfortable reading and writing with accuracy. She is able to sound out unknown words using mnemonic skills she's learned through tutoring. After a review of reading journal, she completed several more sight word flash cards by writing sentences on the back of the cards. She then read aloud from "The Best Place to Read," and was able to recognize most of the sight words and was tasked with sounding out many unknown, complex words. She was given homework in her reading journal about the text "The Best Place to Read.""
"The student did well in her session last night. We spent the time working on her math homework (counting coins), reading from her personal book collection and finding synonyms for a set of words. The student did well in math. We will continue working on making her comfortable even when she makes mistakes. Reading went well this day, and I find that when the student is more excited about a particular book, she does much better. Finally, she did well in her synonym exercise, per usual. I look forward to seeing her again."
