Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student started a new chapter this week and it's the relationship between triangles and circles as it relates to areas and perimeters/circumferences. It is mostly a review and coalescence of the previous two chapters. The student struggled with some algebra, in isolating for a variable when it is in fraction form - he managed to improve at the end, but this will require repetition on his part before it sinks in."
"Today we went over transformation review questions, including rotations and reflections, as well as some distance and midpoint formula questions. Since he wanted to review this material, he was enjoying it a lot. We're really going over older material as his class is moving slower right now. We're grinding the material so he is getting more and more familiar with concepts."
"Today the student worked on her homework, which was on theorems regarding secants, tangents, and intersecting chords in circles. Some of the questions were asking her to apply one of the theorems of the secants/tangents differently. Basically, on how to work backwards. She then worked on factoring and a review for her algebra. She felt relatively comfortable with everything. I also taught her some tips in factoring."
"We went over law of sines and other basic trig applications today. The student already had a solid understanding of the main concepts and direct usage. We then worked on comprehending advanced techniques of solving equations based on trig identities. I was able to break down the scenarios visually (via unit circle) as well as through step by step process with specific identities to help make solving easier. She seemed to understand my methods quickly and was able to use what I showed her effectively towards the practice set I assigned her. She takes a quiz on Thursday."
"We covered the remaining sections for her test on Friday, which mostly dealt with rotations. I helped her through the practice problems in the textbook, and then I created some additional practice problems for her."
"The student has a test coming up on circles. I'm not too worried about this, because circles have been familiar to her. I will make her a quick cheat sheet with all the circle parts and theorems she's struggled with a little bit more. She also did not do as well on her quadrilaterals test as she thought she did. However, when I went over that with her, she was able to quickly correct her own answers."
"I assisted the student with his geometry review in preparation for his test. He did very well and finished his review early, so I gave him some challenge problems. At the end of the session, he reiterated that he felt very confident about the test."
"In this session we continued to work through the student's chapter on circles with a couple of homework assignments he was given. We worked quickly through the first assignment, which focused on arc length. He grasped the concept rather quickly. The next assignment was a bit more challenging in the fact that it encompassed a review of the whole chapter. We also continued making our study guide in preparation for the test that should be coming soon. He has been moving along very well in this subject and I have been very happy to see the progress he had been making in this class."
"We reviewed homework that covered finding side lengths of triangles using 30/60/90 and 45/45/90 triangle rules. We also reviewed homework that covered simplifying algebraic expressions using exponent rules."
"We looked over and corrected problems student missed on her last exam. The material dealt with using the Pythagorean theorem, 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles, laws of sine and cosine, and laws of quadrilaterals. She scored a 75% overall on the exam. Together we worked through the difficult material she missed. I helped her identify the important information within a word problem and how to changes words into mathematical expression. She did very well taking in the information and solving the problems once she had them set-up correctly. She could still work on solving problems using the laws of sine and cosine."
"The student has an upcoming unit test in geometry. She had a very long review packet to work on. It mainly started with using altitudes of right triangles to calculated similar proportions. It also dealt with the very beginning of geometry. She understood the problems she needed to understand by the end of the session."
"Reviewed concepts relating to circles. Focused on angle measures and arc measures. Then, reviewed tangent and secant lines and the properties associated with each. The student has a good understanding of these concepts and the time was spent practicing to make sure he was applying the knowledge correctly and reviewing any issues identified during practice."
