Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In the last session with the student, we worked on multiplication of polynomials. She did well and did not have big issues with most of the questions. I will try to keep the sessions shorter since she appears to focus optimally for the 1.5 hour sessions. She also did well on her section assessment."
"We covered in-depth word problems for algebra. Student seems to have a good idea of the concepts, but does not have an in-depth understanding to apply the knowledge. We will be working on his application, ability to recall faster, and ability to put formulas together for problems."
"We reviewed Chapter 7 of the student's textbook in preparation for her upcoming test. She specifically asked that we review two sections that she felt she still needed a better understanding of: scales of maps and similar triangles. We reviewed these two sections and then we looked at a few questions in the book to work through them. She does very well with setting up and solving proportions; she just felt that she needed a better understanding of identifying corresponding sides of similar triangles so that she does not confuse which angles are equal. We reviewed the ratio of similar triangles and how she can solve for a missing side of similar figures. We reviewed percents and how they are used in word problems- discounts, tips, and sales tax. We worked on several problems regarding these three and we discussed the importance of reading the final question of a word problem to identify whether or not they are asking for the tax paid or the total amount paid, the discount amount or the sale price of an item after the discount has been applied, the tip left for a service or the total amount paid including the tip. The student did very well with this. We also discussed how 10% is the same as dividing by 10, which is also the same as multiplying by .10. I explained to her that dividing by a decimal results in a larger answer while multiplying by a decimal results in a smaller answer. Compared to when we divide by a natural number we get a smaller answer and when we multiply by a natural number we get a larger answer. We will talk more about this when we have more time. The focus of this session was strictly to review for her test."
"We reviewed the student's homework covering systems of equations. He is doing a great job with the process; he will just sometimes make the occasional simple arithmetic mistake. I have been trying to get him to stop and think about the problem more instead of just going through the steps. He has been catching more of these mistakes on his own."
"We started by reviewing one and two-step equations that required using all four operations with fractions. I also taught the student the midpoint formula, and we applied that to various line segments. We also practiced finding the equations of parallel lines and finding the value of different functions for given values of x."
"We covered changing forms of inequalities. We worked on standard form into slope intercept form. I also introduced linear transformations. I included strategies that list out the steps and help him identify what the procedure is. I left him with the steps listed out and advised that good practice would be to review the problems and relate them to the steps."
