Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on a reading passage the student had for homework about the human brain. He had to answer comprehension questions that followed the passage. He needed some guidance with the higher level questions. We also worked on a chapter review worksheet for math, which focused on dividing with decimals. He did well with the computations."
"We decided to work on her reading comprehension and increasing her vocabulary. I found 3 articles at a 7th grade reading level. She read each one out loud. As she was reading them, she would underline any words that she is not familiar with or did not know what it meant. After she finished reading the article, we went through and talked about each word she underlined. We tried to figure out the definition based on context clues, and if that did not help then we went and found the definition. She did very well on the three articles. We will continue to do things similar to this and there are also some online resources I am going to introduce to her that will make working on reading comprehension more interactive and not so mundane."
"This was our initial session. I spoke with the student and her mother to determine their goals and discuss a strategy. We used materials from previous tutoring sessions to begin, and I think I have a fairly decent idea of her level of reading. We discussed some topics of interest, and we are going to work on finding books at her reading level. I am also going to print some short stories to work on comprehension."
"We started off with a 4th grade passage to do a one-minute fluency test. The student read 60 words. I read the same passage, and he repeated it again and read 75 words. He did much better with the comprehension questions, finding evidence for his answers in the passage. Then, we read the "The Streak," a book about Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak. We took turns reading lines. I can tell he hasn't been reading a lot, and I encouraged him to keep reading!"
"Today the student and I went over some concerns that her teacher had. We also worked on writing conclusions. Lastly, we worked on reading comprehension and gaining imagery while reading, along with some figurative language. She has progressed very well, and she is going to work on some things in school with the help of her teacher going forward."
"The student is working on recognizing the similarities between decimals, fractions, and percents. She has been doing pretty well with this subject but still needs a little more practice when it comes to recognizing tenths vs hundredths. She is working on rounding to the nearest 10 and hundred. She does well when I assist her. I have been moving away from helping her so she does not depend on me as much."
