Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has improved a lot. He remembers his core vocabulary very well. His writing is also getting better. Today's vocabulary list was a mixture of things he knew and things he needed to have introduced to him, so we went patiently through it together, and I think he will be in good shape with it now for his classes this week."
"This is the second session for these students. I first asked them questions on the materials they've learned from the first session. We practiced the four tones, the first three Pinyin letters, and the first three numbers. Today we continued with three more new Pinyin letters, and numbers four through six. They've learned how to say and write in Chinese these three numbers. At the end, I used "five chess" for them to practice dialogue and basic instructional words, as well as listening and saying the numbers. Their homework is to practice saying and writing all six numbers they've learned so far, and the six Pinyin letters."
"Today we put into practice writing some characters the student could visually recognize previously but did not know how to write. I also introduced some new characters to extend his vocabulary. The goal is not just be to able to write the characters individually, but also be able to start forming sentences through writing as his ability to write more characters grows. I left him with some sheets of material from today and encouraged him to practice writing each character we went over."
"Today, the student and I worked on sports word vocabulary. She had a good attitude towards the session. I taught her the strategies of cross referral, drilling skills, and sentence making for grammar building. This was good practice, and a good rapport was built between us very successfully."
"Today, we tried some other exercises outside of the textbook. I asked about what other topics will be covered on the AP exam. We will be learning more cultural and social points, as these will be covered on the exam (the more culture you are aware of, the more points you will score). Today, we tried a translating exercise about the origins of Peking Opera. I will write some more practice tests/reading comprehension exercises related to culture, customs, holidays, etc., while incorporating grammar patterns and vocabulary we have already reviewed."
"We chose to work on character writing today. I walked the student through stroke order and writing about nineteen different characters, including her name."
