Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Tutor and student reviewed the "My Story" homework given to student last week. Student's story contained many sight words with correct spelling and many CVC words that student correctly sounded out. Student has a basic understanding of sentence structure and writes legibly. Student and tutor then discussed the "2 vowels go walking, the first does the talking" trick in order to better understand long vowels. Student then practiced creating "ea" "oa" "ee" and "ay" words. Student is beginning to gain a better understanding of the difference between long and short vowels, but still is quick to make short vowel sounds. Tutor gave student homework that asks her to make a list of long and short vowel words based on a set of pictures. Then tutor had student complete a digraph sort with pictures (th, sh, ch, wh) and student completed with very few errors. Student only struggles to hear the difference/ identify when reading the "ch" and "sh" sounds. Student and tutor then went over sight word flashcards. Tutor gave parent the cards that student especially needed help with in order to practice at home. Student then read aloud "Little Lucy" (guided reading level K!) and student read with about 80% fluency. Most unknown words student was able to sound out or were sight words that student guessed at. Only a few words needed to be given. Student and tutor were only able to read half of the book, as it's quite long, but will finish at the next session. At next session, student and tutor will go over long/ short vowel homework, complete "Little Lucy" and will begin a lesson on blends."
"The student is regularly bringing her own books to read. It is fun to watch her enjoy the stories. After we finished reading the book, we went to the flip flop game of letter tiles. The student wanted to see how many words she could make using the words for foods from a grocery store game. Again, she loves to work with tactile things."
"We went over how to find the clue words to help us find word meanings in the text. The student had some trouble identifying which words were the clue words and needed some help with this. We also went over how to determine cause and effect in reading passages. She did really well today focusing on task!"
