Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we continued to practice the reading passages of the ACT. We focused on several strategies when approaching the test including: finding passages of interest first, reading the whole passage to get the "gist"/main idea/author's purpose, underlining the topic sentence of each paragraph, and underlining transition words. We covered the seven questions types on the reading examine and which ones were easier than others/how to identify types of questions. He did the best on passages that he was interested in. I left him with some notes reviewing the strategies that I think will help him most on the test and the seven question types ranked in order from easier to hardest."
"Today we worked on ACT Math and English. In Math, we worked on a problem set together which dealt with permutations, chord theorems, polynomial degrees, quadratic equations, and general geometry. The area of most challenge today was quadratic equations. In English, we worked on a practice test which covered the whole range of ACT English concepts, including punctuation, redundant and imprecise phrasing, and essay organization. I left the student with a practice test from the prep guide to finish before our next session."
"In this session, we covered some of the topics that she was not as comfortable with from the practice test she took in the last week. We covered expressions, distributive property, and exponents. We also started looking at the science section. We went over the types of problems that she will see as well as some general test-taking strategies for the section. She will be taking the December ACT."
