Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had a GREAT session today. We went over her essay, which was excellent. The only thing the student needed to do was separate her body paragraph into two paragraphs, each representing a point she made in her intro. Then we went over the reading section I had her do. She only got three questions wrong, one of which she mistakenly bubbled. I am having the student focus on Verbal and Math, going forward based on her excellent performance with her essay and reading section. Lastly, we went over the five math questions she got wrong (such improvement!). Most of these questions were math concepts that she had never seen before, and once I explained them, she was fine. For our next session, I'm having her do a verbal section and at least one math section (two if she can manage it). The student is doing great work and I am so pleased and proud of her progress."
"This session deviated from our usual work. The student asked that I help her brainstorm and structure material for a few essays required in the private school application process. By the end of our time together, I feel the student had more than enough information to complete her essays. I was inspired by her passion for soccer, and I feel that if she can integrate her soccer experiences with her perspectives on success, and the role of private school in achieving that success, she will have essay gold!"
"Today, the student and I spent our time focusing on vocabulary building. We went over her homework and corrected some of the uses of the words. I noticed that the student needs to pay attention to her use of prepositions, but in general she knows how to correctly change a noun to a verb and vice versa. We did some additional words together, and I also assigned her some more to do on her own. I will email her a full list later on."
"We covered two practice tests: Chem SAT and Practice Test 1. The student missed 4 on the first one and 2 on the second. Both scores should be an 800. We also covered some practice questions. Electron configuration gave him trouble, so we discussed that. Also, determining the number of moles of a product from variable moles of reactants used. Still, we're seeing good progress."
"We covered types of logic problems on the placement exam and strategies to combat them. The student is great at if/then and conditional questions, but sequence problems are difficult for him. We completed two sets of logic exercises and walked through each sequence question together looking at how to simplify them. We will continue to work on this."
"We covered various potential prompts for the writing section and some grammar/reading comprehension practice problems. The most important goal of this session was to instill general test-taking confidence. We wanted to make sure the exam tomorrow wouldn't have any surprises. We first reviewed a practice essay I'd assigned before the session. This helped me to understand what the student already felt comfortable with (i.e., paragraph structuring, sentence variance) and what needed more attention, like how to choose an anecdote. From there, we went through various other potential essay topics to apply the improvements we discussed to different subjects. We went over the overall format of the exam and its system of grading as well."
