"The student and I focused on two main ideas today: only giving the minimum amount of time/effort needed to find an answer and converting from a written situation to a series of algebraic expressions. For the first one, she did a great job of pushing forward with her chosen strategy, despite a certain amount of self-doubt, which is always a given when taking the GRE. We identified that she usually gets what she needs to, even when she can't explain it completely. Secondly, she got very skilled at assigning variables to specific terms, and is starting to be clearer about how the units of each measurement fit into the math problem."
"The student and I went over probability, standard deviation and other statistical measures of spread in data sets, the inclusion-exclusion principle when calculating the union of two sets, rate problems, and a few other topics. I will be sending him a better explanation of probability distributions and expected values, and extra practice problems on selected topics as we discussed."
"The student and I worked on Chapter 29 in the GRE Practice Problems, covering the subconcept of Mixed Geometry. Topics included: area and circumference of circles, perimeters of rectangles, radii of circles, equal area and circumference of circles (pi * r^2 = 2 * pi * r), equal area and perimeter of squares (4s = s^2), area of triangles, tangents of circles, supplementary angles (sum of 180 degrees), interior angle sum of triangles (180 degrees), right triangle inscribed in circle (hypotenuse is diameter), parallel lines, and transversal. Great session! :)"
"The student improved a lot in her understanding of special right triangles and how they apply to equilateral triangles and squares. We talked mostly about how we deal with different shapes interacting, and how we deal with shaded area problems."
"The student worked on several more practice problems in the official test guide. There were many concepts that she could approach on her own, some that were completely new, and some that just needed a refresher. Overall, she is getting most of the problems on her own now."
"The theme today was exponent rules. A lot of the problems that the student had trouble with just took a reminder of a certain exponent rule to solve. There were also quite a few ratio math problems that she had some trouble with, so we worked on fraction material quite a bit."
