Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued on reading the Aeneid, beginning at line 19. He really needs to brush up on his grammar and vocabulary. I told him to print out my study guide and take a look at that for comprehensive grammar help. Vocabulary he will be able to increase just by continuing to read more. We had a lot of indirect statements in the reading today, so we went over those. Also, the pluperfect tense showed up and he was able to identify all of those. There were a lot of participles, and he struggles with what they look like and how to translate them, so we will have to review those next time."
"We continued working on Kanji today. We have practiced Kanji in reading, writing, and speaking. We used an illustration for body parts, colors by location of items (up, below, left & right) all in Kanji. He did very well, as he usually does all in writing, reading and speaking. For rest of the hour, we did a word game called "Shiritori" by utilizing new and old vocabularies. This seems be a great fun and help for him to review and learn new Japanese."
"The student and I reviewed seasons and how to tell the time in Japanese. Then, we went over big holidays in Japan. We talked about the different traditions in Japan for New Year's Eve and New Year. We will continue studying Japanese holidays and related traditions in our next session on Friday."
"The student had been on vacation, so she hadn't had a chance to do her homework, which was reviewing old vocabulary and the a, i, u, e, and o letters. Today, we reviewed these letters and went into an in-depth writing practice, paying close attention to each "stroke." We also learned the 6th through 9th letters: ka, ki, ku, and ke. We looked at some of the few Japanese words that were in her manga, "Sailor Moon." Most of the book is translated into English, but some of the "utterance" words are left in Japanese."
"The student worked hard today. We covered second-declension nouns, of which she demonstrated a strong grasp. We also covered several miscellaneous points of grammar, mythology, and Roman history and culture as they came up. Great work today!"
"We completed preparation for the student's 5th summer assessment test by going over the practice test provided by his teacher. Provided he learns the vocab list this weekend and develops his familiarity with the perfect tenses and conditional constructions, he should do very well on Monday."
