Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began by looking over his recent test to determine where his few mistakes had occurred and how to avoid similar mistakes in the future. We then set to work with his homework on exponential and logarithmic functions and the graphs and derivatives thereof. We completed the exponential lesson without trouble. We wrapped up so he could go get some rest before his class tonight."
"The student and I worked on his online homework. The focus of these activities was "going to go". For example, he had to conjugate the verb "ir" and use it with 'a ir' (voy a ir, vas a ir, etc.). He did a great job and only had to be reminded a few times to use the 'a'. He also had to use "going to" with other verbs. Such as "voy a jugar" = I'm going to play. The student needs to focus on the pronoun in order to see how to conjugate the verb. We also talked about how the questions use the format: Verb then subject; whereas the answers are in the format: subject then verb. I explained that this was the same in English. We accomplished a lot today and I was happy that the student said the tutoring was really helping him with his class!"
"The student and I continued our discussion of To Kill a Mockingbird and made connections to our previous discussions. He was near the end of the novel, so I also had him create predictions for how the novel would end based on what he had read thus far. We then began studying grammar by reviewing the parts of speech. I had him practice identifying parts of speech in sentences from an old research paper that he had written. He seemed to improve as he did more and more examples."
"The student and I went through his homework assignments, focusing on how to conjugate German possessive pronouns, use 'kein' and 'nicht' correctly, conjugate verbs, and writing German sentences about what he likes to do. I have a better understanding of what level of German he is at and further sessions would start from the basics and work up from there."
"The student and I worked to develop a brief outline and wrote a draft letter requesting deferral to UT's business undergrad program. We set forth his three broad goals for the gap year, and explained how the program will strengthen his abilities as a student."
"Went over a quiz the student got back from last Tuesday. Worked more with Big O notation and a small amount of algorithm analysis. Went over merge sort and selection sort algorithms with some focus on how components of the algorithm contributed to the total runtime. Took another look at the recursive PowerSet algorithm and some aspects of counting theory. Next time, we're looking to help the student get more comfortable with earlier material and maybe start to look at material they just began covering this week."
