Today I quizzed the student on keywords used in word problems. I could tell he studied the key words because he was answering the questions swiftly and correctly. Next I taught him the CUBE method to help answer word problems more effectively. After discussing the steps outlined in the cube method he was able to recite them without any assistance. I required him to use this method for every word problem he completed. After working through all the word problems he realized the CUBE method allowed him to narrow down the important information in the word problem. I assigned some chapter review problems from his workbook to test his knowledge on previous materials. He answered most of these questions correctly without any assistance. However I reminded him to work slowly and effectively in order to avoid making simple mistakes. Next we discussed different methods to utilize when adding and subtracting simple fractions and mixed numbers. He did a very good job with answering questions that required him to add and subtract fractions. I assigned him 3 word problems to complete with the cube method for homework.

For this session, the student completed his homework and practiced his spelling words. He also practiced subtracting 2-digit numbers with regrouping. He really seems to be getting the hang of this concept and has almost mastered it. Great job!

First, I reviewed a homework assignment with the student on multiplying mixed numbers. She had only one error on the assignment. Next, we practiced dividing a whole number by a fraction. I demonstrated a few problems, and I had her practice solving four problems on her own. She was able to answer all the problems correctly, with very minimal assistance. After these problems, I reviewed comparing two fractions to see which one is the greater or lesser one. Finally, we reviewed multiplication facts. She seems to have a very good understanding of multiplying and dividing fractions.

The student and I worked on spelling and math today. He had specific activities that he had to complete that involved his spelling words. He did very well with those activities and had a great attitude about the work. We also worked on word problems and division. He did a fantastic job with the word problems, and he's starting to underline important information to help him solve the problems. However, he still needs some work on division. He knows how to solve division operations, he just draws pictures each time (which he wouldn't have time to do in the event of a timed assessment). I am working with him to remind him that division is simply the reverse of multiplication.
