Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on problems to review for the student's final. We talked about simplifying expressions with radicals, exponents, solving systems of equations algebraically, and graphing and working on quadratic equations. Most of the material we'd worked on a lot previously."
"We worked on factoring of trinomials, and I introduced the quadratic equation. Strategies focused on listing out the factors of both the first and last term and trying them all systematically until they worked. I recommend extra practice in our online class."
"We went over simulations with the random number generator, expected value problems, and probability. Then, we talked about Venn diagrams. We talked about using note cards for vocabulary. I left the student with some videos to watch and a worksheet on simulations."
"I met the student. I asked what they were doing in class, and she said algebra and expressions. We spent most of the session doing basic algebra, with one variable. She was not familiar with what to do with an equation. So, we reviewed the process of how to isolate a variable. It became apparent that she makes errors when it comes to operations involving negative and positive numbers, so we took a break to work on that for a while. We practiced different combinations again and again, and we will do this during most sessions."
"We covered the same problem set up as our session on Monday, but this time we were working with a 3 dimensional development of the fracture rather than a 2D. He finished up the homework problem, and I gave him an overview of what each of the terms represented in the final equation we derived for the time development of the protruding fracture. He was able to work through this problem almost entirely on his own, working with the same method we went over last night."
"The student is really getting the hang of simplifying expressions. She really seems to have a good grasp on algebraic expressions. However, negative numbers don't seem to make intuitive sense for her. If she has time, going back and digging in to negative numbers should be very helpful. We will continue to work on these in future sessions as well."
