How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

One of the most overlooked aspects of the summer is the academic loss it creates for students. Three months of not practicing, reviewing, rehearsing, and stimulating the mind often causes a learning deficit. Research has shown that during the summer months, students who do not study often have a loss of knowledge and skill. This includes sometimes losing up to two months of achievement in math and/or reading. Over time, this could lead to two or three years of learning deficit. Often, students must spend one or two months in the fall relearning material they have forgotten.

One way to combat summer loss and keep your child's academic capabilities up to par is by getting them a tutor for the summer. Varsity Tutors could help you connect with an independent tutor in Redmond who can assist your child in their summer learning. All of the tutors that Varsity Tutors can connect you with in Redmond, WA, are skilled in teaching over the summer. Tutors can work with your child online or in person, at any location that you may choose. Timing is always flexible to meet your schedule.

Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Redmond, WA Summer tutoring
The student and I worked on his Latin for his test. While he is grasping the basic concepts of the course, he will need to put more work into the specifics of the course. He needs to dedicate a moderately small amount of time aside every day in order to work on vocabulary memorization. At first, this should be a small amount, such as 5 words. If he becomes more successful with this over time, he can gradually add more in. However, he needs to train his mind to memorize and work at this as he would any other physical skill. After a more reserved start, he definitely seemed more relaxed (and was learning much more!) by the end of the session. He should memorize, due to the proximity of the test, at least 10 words tomorrow; however, this needs to be broken into smaller chunks (no more than 5 cards at a time for no more than 30 minutes at a time).

We reviewed for two tests, an essay, and his entrance exam. One of the most important areas he needs to work on is organization and planning, so we mapped out his review sessions for the upcoming tests and essay. We also covered the material in the tests and essay. I encouraged him to actively read his notes every day when he gets home and try to explain the ideas out loud either to himself or someone else at home. We also covered more of the math section of the review book for his entrance exam. I assigned him more math work from that book.

Both students had math assignments that they worked on. Student 1's assignment went over dilation of polygons, and Student 2 had a couple of assignments. She completed one that dealt with determining the side lengths of similar polygons from scale factor. Student 2 also completed a vocabulary worksheet for her Language Arts class.

The student had a book that he's reading from school along with some comprehension questions to answer. I listened to him read and helped him answer the questions by asking him to find support for his answer in the text. He completed that assignment which is to be turned in or discussed in class on Monday.
